Message from the Center Director
With knowledge and technology born from free and open thinking,
We will realize a sustainable and prosperous future
Hokkaido University possesses world-class results, personnel, and facilities in the field of soft materials research, and has long led this research field. Soft materials, including polymers, gels, colloids, and biomaterials, are advanced materials that are familiar in our daily lives while simultaneously shaping the future in a wide range of fields such as environment, information, energy, and medicine. Unlike “hard materials” such as metals and ceramics, soft materials are a relatively young field of study, and in recent years, basic and applied research has been accelerating at an explosive pace, mainly in Japan, China, Europe, and the United States.

Furthermore, to address urgent issues common to humanity such as sustainable energy, environmental conservation, medicine and health, and resource recycling, seven departments—the Graduate School of Advanced Life Science, the Graduate School of Engineering, the Graduate School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Agriculture, the Graduate School of Fisheries Sciences, the Field Science Center, and Hokkaido University Hospital—are organically collaborating to build an interdisciplinary and comprehensive research system. Another characteristic of this center is that it is organized primarily by young researchers under the age of 40, and is positioned as a model for sustainable center formation with a view to generational change.
Through this strong internal collaboration and cooperation with researchers and companies around the world, we will open up new possibilities for soft materials and bring innovative solutions to society. Our center wholeheartedly welcomes collaboration with diverse partners, including companies, research institutions, and local governments both domestically and internationally, and together we will contribute to creating the future society.Like the vast natural landscape of Hokkaido, we will realize a sustainable and prosperous future through knowledge and technology born from free and open thinking.

About the Logo
Aiming to solve challenges in Japan and around the world.
This research center aims to solve challenges in the Hokkaido region, and ultimately in Japan and around the world, through basic and applied research on soft materials, in collaboration with land and sea fields and advanced medical care. The design depicts Hokkaido, with its soft and fresh feel, surrounded by the sea, mountains, and medical care. Furthermore, the placement of stars at the Sapporo and Hakodate campuses, along with the intuition of an eye, creates an impactful logo.
