We are conducting interdisciplinary research that crosses material and academic disciplines, with soft materials as the core of our research.

Many “soft materials” exist around us. Jelly, cream, rubber, sponges, and even the biological tissues that make up our bodies are all soft materials. These materials possess unique properties that combine the characteristics of both solids and liquids, and they respond sensitively to various stimuli and environmental changes.

Our laboratory aims to understand, control, integrate, and apply the structure and function of this soft material. In particular, soft materials with high biocompatibility are extremely important for applications in the medical and healthcare fields. They are attracting attention as indispensable materials for the development of next-generation biomaterials, such as artificial tissues, regenerative medicine, and flexible sensors and actuators.

In designing these functional soft materials, we are also focusing on the utilization of naturally derived polymers, bio-inorganic substances, and biological resources. Rather than simply synthesizing materials using natural products, we aim to create new naturally derived soft materials that maximize the material characteristics of natural products. Hokkaido, in particular, is blessed with abundant land and sea resources, offering unique materials and fieldwork opportunities. Let’s take full advantage of Hokkaido University’s location and work together to create a new soft matter science that “connects nature and materials.”
